Triplet quantum yields in light-scattering powder samples measured by laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy (LIOAS)

Abstract: In recent years, different methods and techniques have been applied to study the primary photophysical processes occurring in dye-loaded light-scattering powdered samples. In spite of this, there are still no reliable methods for the determination of triplet quantum yields for this kind of systems. Laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy (LIOAS) has been extensively used for the determination of triplet quantum yields of dyes in solution. In a previous work, LIOAS was applied to the measurement of absolute emi… Show more

“…The values of Φ F found in basic ethanol, where the dyes remain dianionic, are 0.68 for EoY and 0.76 for PhB . For xanthene dyes, Φ F values expected in cellulose have to be somewhat larger than those found in alcohols . Therefore, the experimental values found for Φ F0 seem to be reasonable.…”

“…To determine observed triplet quantum yields ( Ф T,obs ), LIOAS measurements were performed on optically thick layers containing the dyes under study and compared with those on BBG, used as a calorimetric reference, included in microcrystalline cellulose at different concentrations . To ensure reproducibility, optically thick layers were prepared in this case loading a specially designed aluminum holder with 60 mg of dry solid, pressing with 25.5 bar for 120 s and allowing relaxation in a desiccator at atmospheric pressure for 24 h. This procedure renders a probe with a diameter of 1 cm and a thickness of 0.2 cm.…”

“…He also collaborated with Andr e Braun and Esther Oliveros, Karlsruhe, Jos e Luis Bourdelande, Barcelona and Silvia Braslavsky (one of the undersigning). During his last visit in M€ ulheim for some weeks in 2004, he designed a special cuvette for laser-induced optoacoustic measurements in compressed samples under controllable pressure, which was produced in the workshops of the Max Planck Institute in M€ ulheim and afterward used very successfully in Enrique's lab in Buenos Aires (6).…”
