Trips for outdoor exercise at different stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland

Abstract: Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has had exceptional effects on travel behaviour in the UK. This paper focuses specifically on the outdoor exercise trips of Scottish residents at several distinct points of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the negative health consequences of limited exercise, this study aims to determine the sociodemographic and behavioural factors affecting frequency of outdoor exercise trips. Methods Using recent public survey data (n=6000), random param… Show more

“…The unrestricted formulation of the random parameters in Equation ( 2) allows the identification of the variables that influence the mean of the distribution of the random parameters. These variables decompose the unobserved heterogeneity that may be encapsulated in the means of the random parameters [29]. It should be noted that a normal distribution was used for fitting the random parameters in the binary logit models, in line with previous literature [27,29].…”

“…During the transition of lockdown implementation, Pawar et al (2021) stated that Indians decreased their work-related and nonwork-related trips during this period. Regarding outdoor activities and medical visits, Semple et al (2021) found that the frequency of outdoor exercise trips dropped by up to 46.4 % in Scotland during the lockdown, whereas Kumagai (2021) reported a decline in physician visits in Japan because of the outbreak. Likewise, a substantial decrease in trip volume was found at amenities and grocery stores in the US ( Sevtsuk et al, 2021 , Wang et al, 2020 ).…”
