Triterpenoid Saponins From the Stem Bark of Pentaclethra eetveldeana

Abstract: Two previously undescribed triterpenoid saponins together with 4 known ones were isolated from the stem bark of Pentaclethra eetveldeana De Wild. & Th. Dur. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR experiments in combination with mass spectrometry as 3- O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-[β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-α-L-arabinopyranosyloleanolic acid and 3- O-β-D-glucopyrano… Show more

“…Phytochemical studies have previously been carried out only on stem bark and roots of other species of the genus Pentaclethra. Therefore, previous studies on stem bark of P. macroloba, and P. eetveldeana led to the isolation of saponins [2] [37] [38], phenolic compounds [39] [40] [41], and fatty acid derivatives [37] [39]. Furthermore, tannins were isolated from stem bark of P. macroloba and P. macrophylla [39] [40] [41].…”

“…For instance, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Memvanga et al reported the antiplasmodial effect of the root bark of this plant [ 50 ]. In the same way, triterpenoid saponins have been isolated from its bark [ 51 , 52 ]. In particular, traditionally in the Republic of Congo, P. eetveldeana bark is used in the treatment of various respiratory tract diseases (cough, bronchitis, whooping cough, tuberculosis), in intoxications, constipation, stomach pains, hernia outbreaks, but also for genitourinary infections and various generalized pains.…”

“…Pentaclethra is a small genus of the Fabaceae family, comprising mainly three species of trees, distributed throughout subtropical and tropical regions of the world [1][2][3][4]. The species of the genus Pentaclethra, such as Pentaclethra macroloba and P. eetveldeana, have been described as medicinal plants with their biological activities assessed [3,4].…”
