The study investigates the seasonal and spatial variations in water quality parameters at four different locations along Potou lagoon for seventeen consecutive months. In order to explore spatial variation among different stations and seasonal changes, no parametric test of ANOVA was used to compare the mean values of the tested parameters for all the different sampling sites and seasons. Seasonal observations on water quality parameters and chlorophyll-a in Potou coastal lagoon revealed that the coastal water was significantly influenced by freshwater during the long and short rainy seasons. The seasonal significant variation (p < 0.05) was generally recorded between the long dry season and the short rainy season. Temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, transparency and chlorophyll-a increased during the long dry season, whereas, the concentration of nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus) increased in the rainy periods. Contrary to the seasonal variation, a spatial homogeneity (horizontal) was registered for all variables, a condition related to the low human occupation in the lagoon watershed. Comparing this study with others conducted in Potou lagoon in 2008, no critical differences that evidence alteration in the water quality were found.

In this study, distribution of epilithic algae assemblages in Lake Kovada and Kovada Channel, their relationships to environmental factors, and biological water quality were investigated. Epilithic algae and water samples were taken from four stations (one in the channel, others in the lake), between June 2012-May 2013 seasonally. Totally 51 taxa were o b s e r v e d belonging to the groups Bacillariophyta (37), Chlorophyta (8), Charophyta (4) and Cyanobacteria (2), respectively. The stations were clustered into main two groups based on UPGMA. The highest similarity value was determined between third and fourth station (94%). Saprobic Index (SI) was applied in order to determine biological water quality. Physicochemical parameters have been evaluated according to the Klee's method and Regulation on the Management of Surface Water Quality in Turkish (RMSWQ). According to the Klee's method, water quality was found unpolluted in Kovada Lake, and its channel while it was found as polluted based on RMSWQ. Biological water quality values indicated Lake Kovada as poorly polluted, but its channel as polluted. According to CCA, 84.6% of the variance was described by the first four axes of the relations of species and environmental variables (r=0.963), and pH, conductivity and Clwere found to be the most influential variables on distribution of dominant taxa.

Nevertheless, environmental factors which had great variability in lagooner region, were identified as affecting the species occurrence (Coelho et al, 2007), but it was reported by Ribeiro et al (2003) that these changes could be seen at higher latitudes where yearly light and temperature changes are marked. The taxonomical composition of epilithic diatoms was investigated at intertidal zone of Homa lagoon, Aegean sea, Turkey. The stations are located in different littoral zones of the study area and they are different from each other in terms of hydrological respect. The samples contained a mixture of forms growing on the stones themselves, on silt accumulated on the stones and forms epiphytic on other algae, I will refer to this collective community as epilithon. Epilithic diatom species, which constitute the majority of the community were examined from obtained material. A total of 67 diatom taxa belonging to 34 genera were identified to the genus or species level. The species more frequently found in the samples were Cocconeis placentula, Cocconeis scutellum, Mastogloia pumila, Navicula cincta and Navicula crypyocephala var. veneta. Nine of the species identified during the research period seem to be previously unreported for Turkish coastal waters. İstasyonlar, çalışma bölgesinin farklı kıyısal zonlarında yer almaktadır ve hidrolojik açıdan birbirlerinden farklıdır. Alınan örnekler, taş üzerinde bulunan diyatomeleri, taş üzerine biriken kum taneciklerine yapışarak yaşayan diyatomeleri ve diğer algler üzerinde bulunan epifitik diyatomeleri kapsamaktadır ve bu kommunite epiliton olarak ifade edilmektedir. Kommunitenin büyük çoğunluğunu oluşturan epilitik diyatome türleri toplanan materyalde incelenmiş, 34 genusa ait toplam 67 taxa, tür ve genus seviyesinde tanımlanmıştır. Cocconeis placentula, Cocconeis scutellum, Mastogloia pumila, Navicula cincta and Navicula crypyocephala var. veneta türleri örnekleme boyunca sık bulunan türlerdir. Araştırma döneminde saptanan türlerin 9 tanesi Türkiye kıyısal suları için daha önceden rapor edilmemiştir. Bu türlere ait detaylı morfolojik özellikler ve orijinal fotoğraflar çalışmaya eklenmiştir.
