“…This trophoblast disturbance in various forms of low birth weight infants is further expressed in the significant increase of predegenerative and degenerative syncytium äs well äs the average number of LANGHANS cells per visual field. Evidently there is a limited trophoblast function still present in predegenerative syncytium and its plasma polyp formation [33]. The increase of degenerative syncytium however demonstrates convincingly the loss of nutritive and hormonal trophoblast function.…”

“…KAUFMANN [8,10] introduced the classification into mature, predegenerative, and degenerative syncytium äs well äs varying forms of differentiation of LANGHANS cells with the methodology of counterstained enzyme-incubated semi-thin sections combining histochemical reactions and the observation of structural and cytologic changes. It has been demonstrated quantitatively that in various forms of high-risk pregnancies [8,33,34,35], intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity [20,21] a functional and morphological trophoblast disturbance is always present. Based on our own quantitative results [24] we will discuss die question of the measureability of clinical forms of placental insufficiency at the chorion epithelium of placental resorption villi.…”
