“…Because, on average, the P E in the NA is higher than in WNP (Atkinson and Holliday 1977), then for a given MWS, the R4 of tropical cyclones whose WPR satisfy the NA D-WPR are expected to be smaller than those satisfying the WNP D-WPR.…”

“…In KZ07, mention is made of the Atkinson and Holliday (1977) wind-pressure relationship adopted by the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC), situated on La Réunion Island (overseas department of France) for use in the SWIO. But as no mention is made of this Atkinson and Holliday WPR in Dvorak (1984), and to avoid confusion for users of the SWIO tropical cyclone operational plan, the WPR included in Dvorak (1984) for use in the western North Pacific (WNP) is referred to as the WNP D-WPR.…”

“…Records with intensity weaker than tropical storms (TS) were excluded from our analysis since the analysis of tropical depressions is more subjective, especially for the cases that never developed into TSs. Additionally, although the most famous wind-pressure relationship in the western North Pacific was documented by Atkinson and Holliday (1977), it is unstable in early and late TC seasons, as well as for the cases of midget TCs (Chip Guard, personal communication). Therefore, the JMA's designations of storm categories were used in the following analysis rather than being determined from the sustained wind measurements that were taken before 1977.…”

“…The mean wind speed data were obtained from the Bureau of Meteorology's TC module database which derives data from the cyclone advisories issued by the responsible agencies. The minimum pressures were estimated using the relationship of Atkinson and Holliday (1977) adopted by the Australian TC module team. Climatological numbers are from Cooper and Falvey (2009) for the northwest Pacific and southern hemisphere and Mandal (1991) for the Bay of Bengal.…”
