Tropospheric photooxidation of CF3CH2CHO and CF3(CH2)2CHO initiated by Cl atoms and OH radicals

Abstract: Abstract. The absolute rate coefficients for the tropospheric reactions of chlorine (Cl) atoms and hydroxyl (OH) radicals with CF 3 CH 2 CHO and CF 3 (CH 2 ) 2 CHO were measured as a function of temperature (263-371 K) and pressure (50-215 Torr of He) by pulsed UV laser photolysis techniques. Vacuum UV resonance fluorescence was employed to detect and monitor the time evolution of Cl atoms. Laser induced fluorescence was used in this work for the detection of OH radicals as a function of reaction time. No pres… Show more

“…This increase in k OH and k Cl with the length of the hydrocarbon chain has also been observed for the OH and Cl rate coefficients for partially fluorinated aldehydes CF 3 (CH 2 ) x CHO. [18] Regarding the degradation products of reactions (1) and (2), mechanistic studies carried out both in the absence and presence of NO x on the OH and Cl reactions with CF 3 CH 2 OH [6,25,26] and CF 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH [7][8][9] confirm that the main reaction pathway proceeds via hydrogen atom abstraction from the CH 2 group adjacent to the OH group, since the main primary product was the corresponding aldehyde. Theoretical studies recently performed by our group on the Cl-initiated reaction with CF 3 CH 2 OH [26] are consistent with the experimental observa- Table 2S of the Supporting Information.…”

“…The experimental setup employed in this study has been recently described by AntiÇolo et al [18] Typically, spectra were obtained from the co-addition of 16 interferograms, which required about 1 min of acquisition time. A White-type gas cell was used with a fixed optical path length of 8 m. IR spectra were recorded under static conditions from diluted mixtures of CF 3 The absorption cross section (base 10) at each wavenumber, s n , was obtained by applying the Beer-Lambert law as described in AntiÇolo et al [18] by plotting the absorbance versus HFA concentration [Eq. (9)]:…”

“…The second experimental system, based on Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, was employed for determining the IR absorption cross sections, σe v , of HFO-1243zf and their integrated values over a specific wavenumber range, S int . The experimental setups, techniques, and methodologies are described in detail in previous works (Jiménez et al 2007(Jiménez et al , 20052010;Antiñolo et al 2010Antiñolo et al , 2012. Only a brief description is given below.…”
