Troubling the Troublemakers: Three Challenges to Post-Qualitative Inquiry

Abstract: In recent years, a number of prominent scholars have criticized the current state of qualitative research and advocated a paradigm of post-qualitative inquiry (PQI). Incorporating insights from new materialism, PQI seeks to trouble what it calls conventional humanist qualitative methodology (CHQM). Although sympathetic to this overall project, the present article identifies and discusses three challenges in current PQI, namely the roles it ascribes to theory, to data, and to writing. It is argued that PQI risk… Show more

“…Data analysis was performed iteratively throughout the study. First, members of the research team (SP, RO, NC, JS) conducted an initial theory-driven analysis, guided by principles of post-qualitative inquiry that position theory as method (Aagaard, 2021;Pierre, 2021), using the work of Ahmed (2004) and Savreemootoo (2020). Following the principles of post-qualitative inquiry (Pierre, 2021) and the increasing calls for involving stakeholders in research (National Health and Medical Research Council, 2018), the team contributed to analysis during formal researcher-service meetings, when reporting on the analysis (this was done with the approval of the service who commissioned the evaluation), and when refining the analysis for write up.…”

“…The second challenge in diffractive analysis is related to power relations in research. Even though diffractive analysis relies on a flattening relationship between the researchers and data, the researchers need to be “equipped with a certain readiness to notice” the certain data that stand out (Aagaard, 2021, p. 8). When producing diffractive analysis, researcher’s gender, class, and other personal and professional experiences are important factors intra-acting with theory and data (Lenz Taguchi & Palmer, 2013).…”

“…bracketing in phenomenology and grounded theory) (Glaser, 1992). PQI rejects the cautious relationship between theory and method that predominates (Aagaard, 2021), seeing it as one of many ‘leftovers from a positivist approach that still has tentacles into a (traditional humanist) qualitative research paradigm’ (Østern et al, 2021, p. 12). Instead, PQI ‘comes with no methodology at all, no pre-existing rules, processes, methods, categories, or “determining judgment”’ (St.…”

“…Pierre, 2017, 2019, 2021). Instead, theory, plasticity and affective engagement are prioritised (Aagard, 2021; Carlson et al, 2021; Tesar, 2021). Post-qualitative forms of inquiry are disperse, taking many forms, such as the performative paradigm (Østern et al, 2021), arts-based research (Rousell, 2019), immersive cartography (Rousell, 2019) and VRE.…”
