Trucut biopsy - An effective diagnostic tool in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers: A preliminary study

Abstract: Background: Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers are commonly diagnosed by histopathological examination of a punch biopsy specimen from the lesion. The histopathological report of the punch biopsy specimen in certain cases is inconclusive, most commonly in cases of endophytic growths. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of trucut biopsy as a diagnostic procedure in such cases of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal growth which are clinically malignant but histopathology report by punch biopsy is inconclusive. “…Trucut biopsy is a novel diagnostic tool that can be commonly used in early laryngeal malignancies especially in those cases where there is strong suspicion of malignancy and the lesion is found to be submucosal. Trucut biopsies are proven to be useful when the biopsy sample has to include cells from deeper tissues with underlying the inflammation, oedema or in cases of endophytic growths [13]. At our centre, we have also used core biopsy gun (16G, 16 cm-green) for submucosal base of tongue lesions with confirmatory results as Core biopsy takes sample from adequate depth as well as does not traumatise the surrounding mucosa.…”
