“…Assisted gene flow can be used as a strategy to facilitate local adaptation to climate change (Aitken and Whitlock, 2013). Plant conservation and restoration managers are encouraged to experiment with gene flow and to use prescriptive gene flow more often, employing adaptive management (e.g., Williams, 2011;Lien et al, 2021) with respect to gene flow levels and prescriptive population mixes (Sgrò et al, 2011). Collecting seeds and experimenting with seed mixes that represent different gene flow "distances" are important and sorely needed actions and are especially important to test now that range shifts related to climate are prominent.…”

“…This transparency and meaningful participation are important components of effectiveness and legitimacy within adaptive governance structures (Hogl et al 2012, O'Donnell et al 2019, and gaps in their implementation can exacerbate the challenges of achieving good governance in multijurisdictional and multiscale systems (Badenoch 2002, Akamani andWilson 2011). This can also reduce trust, exacerbating preexisting conflict among actors when there are competing viewpoints (Lien et al 2021). Adaptive processes need to be sincere and understood by communities for effective engagement (Allan and Watts 2018).…”

“…Thus, the experimental design, follow-up monitoring of a policy or other solution, and re-design for the next implementation round is useful for situations involving ecosystems, where there are numerous factors at play and uncertainty affecting the environment or resource. Lien et al (2021) summarizes the functions of adaptive management in the following Figure 5: As a separate idea, co-management -or collaborative management -"captures the idea that rights and responsibilities should be shared among those with a claim to the environment or a natural resource" (Plummer, 2009). While early definitions focused on power sharing between state and local (or indigenous) resource users, the concept has been broadened to include an array of participants and has been applied across several resource contexts.…”
