“…As their discs are stacked one on top of another to form columns,2–4 they possess unique optoelectronic properties, allowing them to find an array of potential applications in one‐dimensional conductors, photoconductors, photovoltaic solar cells, field effect transistors, and so forth 5–9. Research activity in the field of DLCs has grown rapidly and to date many discogens have been developed, including hexaalkanoate‐substituted benzene,1 hexaalkynyl‐substituted benzene,10 triphenylene derivatives,11–14 (thio)truxene derivatives,15–17 naphthalene derivatives,18 and octasubstituted metallophthalocyanine. Among them, triphenylene derivatives are particularly promising because their chemistry is readily accessible.…”

“…It is interesting that an acrylate group at the terminal end of the peripheral chain plays a role to decrease the thermal stability of columnar phases, and instead a discotic nematic phase appears. As for the occurrence of a nematic phase in triphenylene mesogens, several reports have shown the steric parts in the peripheral and flexible moiety increase the possibility of a nematic phase 21,22. In this case as well, an introduction of acrylate at the end of the chain seems to cause the suppression of columnar stability due to the dynamical aspect, leading to the occurrence of a nematic phase.…”

“…[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Truxene is a C 3 -symmetric PAH that has been intensively studied for the past 15-20 years. 15 In particular, it has been used as a precursor to polyarenes, 16,17 liquid crystals 18,19 and hemifullerenes, 20,21 all of which have potential to be used in organic electronics. 22 Many truxene derivatives have been synthesised 23- 25 and utilized for their light emitting and light harvesting properties [26][27][28] while other analogues have found applications in dendrimers, [29][30][31] gels, 32,33 photoresists, 34,35 uorescent probes, 36,37 and two photon absorbers.…”
