Tubal Pregnancy After Sterilization

Abstract: Summary Twelve cases of tubal pregnancy after sterilization operations are reported and the pathogenesis is discussed. Diagnosis is sometimes delayed because of the history of previous sterilization. It is paradoxical that the diagnosis of an intra‐uterine pregnancy after tubal sterilization is rarely in doubt yet the possibility of the fertilized ovum implanting in a tube known to have been damaged is some‐times overlooked. It is suggested that bilateral salpingectomy is the correct opera‐tive treatment for t… Show more

“…Nevertheless, to avoid the risk of recur rent tubal pregnancy, bilateral salpingectomy should at least be performed when dealing with ectopic tubal preg nancy after previous sterilization [2]. However, a less radical approach may be adopted by performing unilat eral salpingectomy on the affected tube only if the pres ence of a tuboperitoneal fistula in the contralateral prox imal tubal segment has been excluded by intrauterine dye injection at the time of surgery.…”

“…It has been estimated that approximately 12-16% of pregnancies occurring subsequent to tubal sterilization are ectopic [1][2][3][4][5]. Other sequelae of tubal sterilization include menstrual disturbances, tubal pol yps, epithelial inclusions, endometriosis, endosalpingosis, tubal cyst and emotional conflicts [6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…22 Salpingectomy is the preferred method for women who have become pregnant after a tubal ligation. 23 Several case-control studies published in the 1980s demonstrated a protective effect of tubal occlusion against ovarian cancer. 24 A recent pooled analysis of 13 case-control studies demonstrated a 29% decreased risk of invasive ovarian cancers in women who had undergone tubal sterilization.…”
