“…For instance, fan worms (Annelida: Sabellidae), which currently include about 400 described species from marine habitats worldwide, are capable of secreting mucus to cover the surface of their body, forming parchment-like tubes that can be deployed in a defensive role (Avitzur, 1990;Bonar, 1972;Giangrande et al, 2014;Gosline and DeMont, 1985). The fan worm has an inverted umbrella-like crown with over 40 radiolar tentacles, which is usually extended into the water column beyond the protective tubes for feeding and respiration (Dales, 1957;Vinn et al, 2018). These radiolar tentacles possess compound eyes and other photoreceptors, serving as an alarm system for encroaching threats, which can elicit a fast defensive response in which all the tentacles are entirely retracted into the tube with the full contraction of the worm body (Movie 1) Bok et al, 2017a).…”
