Tuberculosis, BCG Vaccination, and COVID-19: Are They Connected?

Abstract: Evidence from multiple scientific studies suggests that the Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine, widely used worldwide as a preventive measure against tuberculosis, also offers cross-protection against other pathogens. This review aimed to gather data from research that studied the mechanisms involved in the immunological protection induced by the BCG vaccine, which may be important in the control of viral infections, such as COVID-19. Through a literature review, we compiled information about the different… Show more

“…Besides from the novel COVID vaccination, the bacillus Calmette−Guérin (BCG) vaccine against tuberculosis holds general protection from wide range of infectious diseases [101,102]. In the era of COVID, the BCG vaccine has been proposed against SARS-CoV-2 severity where BCG vaccination is shown to have negatively associated with COVID-19 mortality [103,104]. One study showed that BCG vaccine against COVID-19 was significant in young population, but was not as effective in older population [105].…”

“…COVID-19 Saudi patients who were previously vaccinated against BCG and seasonal influenza were able to report higher changes in their HRQoL. It was reported that some BCG vaccine strains can be used as an additional defense in future pandemics [ 36 ]. The WHO and more than 20 European countries have already recommended the co-administration of influenza and COVID-19 vaccines [ 37 ].…”
