Tuberculosis infection status and risk factors among health workers: an updated systematic review

Abstract: Tuberculosis (TB) infection is a common occupational risk for health workers (HWs) and poses a threat to the patients under their care and to other HWs. Hence, the development of a prevention strategy is crucial. We conducted a study to understand the status and risk factors of TB infection among HWs. The existing literature was searched for all published reports from 1 August 2010 to 31 December 2018, related to TB among HWs according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses g… Show more

“…Two other publications, including Peruvian HCWs, did not report the participant’s ages ( 16 , 42 ). Furthermore, two systematic reviews on tuberculosis infection in HCWs ( 43 , 44 ), one specifically conducted on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) ( 43 ), did not provide information on the participants’ ages.…”

“…This study evaluated the association between physical therapists' (PTs) muscular fitness and Work Ability Index (WAI) in Spain and it showed that PTs aged 50 years or older had lower WAI scores than their younger counterparts. Increased risk of osteoporosis, tuberculosis, deaths from COVID-19 have been also associated with older HCWs (Lee et al. , 2021; Rinaldi et al.…”

“…This study evaluated the association between physical therapists' (PTs) muscular fitness and Work Ability Index (WAI) in Spain and it showed that PTs aged 50 years or older had lower WAI scores than their younger counterparts. Increased risk of osteoporosis, tuberculosis, deaths from COVID-19 have been also associated with older HCWs (Lee et al, 2021;Rinaldi et al, 2021;Verma et al, 2021). Age-related differences were assessed by Merkus et al (2019) and conclusion was made that the level of occupational physical demands and the higher relative physical strain in older employees require addressing to promote sustainable work participation among an ageing population.…”

“…Tuberculosis (TB) is a signi cant risk factor for healthcare workers (HCWs) and other patients, as the rate of TB infection among HCWs is higher than that of the general population [1]. It is an occupational risk factor for both latent and active TB infections, with the risk reaching nearly 30% in some parts of the world [1,2]. Early identi cation and isolation of TB patients can help reduce the risk of nosocomial infections among HCWs [3].…”
