Tuberculous meningitis due to Mycobacterium bovis: a report of two cases

Abstract: Summary Two Caucasian patients with bovine tuberculous meningitis are described. Classical Mycobacterium bovis was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid on both occasions. Despite the elimination of cattle tuberculosis in this country, reactivated primary disease due to the bovine tubercle bacillus may still occur.

“…Humans with encephalic tuberculosis may present high lymphocyte cellular population in the liquor cytology; however, in the cases in which the infection is in the initial phase, neutrophils in greater quantity may be visualized (Coutinho & Tarragô 1976, Rock et al 2008. Besides the evaluation of the inflammatory cells present in the liquor, the Ziehl-Neelsen technique can be performed to observe the agent in the cerebrospinal fluid, though the absence of bacillus does not imply in the exclusion of the disease (Wilkins et al 1986).…”

“…M bovis meningitis has been reported in human beings (Jones and Silva 1982, Wilkins and others 1986, Norton and others 1995), but the pathogenesis of this complication of TB in man is poorly understood (Tsenova and others 1999). In cattle there are few reports of similar complications (Hartley 1974).…”

“…Tuberculosis in humans is chiefly caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( M. tb ). However, Mycobacterium bovis ( M. bovis ), the major tuberculosis pathogen in cattle, also causes disease in humans and is usually implicated in extrapulmonary tuberculosis (Wilkins et al ., 1986). Other members of the M. tb complex (MTC), such as M. bovis BCG (BCG), Mycobacterium africanum and Mycobacterium microti , rarely cause disease in immunocompromised populations (Metchock et al ., 1999; Niemann et al ., 2000).…”
