Generally, interactions at surface asperities are the cause of wear. Two-Thirds of wear in industry occurs because of the abrasive or adhesive mechanisms. This research presents an analytical model for abrasion of additive manufactured Digital Light Processing products using pin-on-disk method. Particularly, the relationship between abrasion volume, normal load, and surface asperities’ angle is investigated. To verify the proposed mathematical model, the results of this model are verified with the practical experiments. Results show that the most influential parameters on abrasion rate are normal load and surface’s normal angle. Abrasion value increases linearly with increasing normal load. The maximum abrasion value occurs when the surface’s normal angle during fabrication is 45°. After the asperities are worn the abrasion volume is the same for all specimens with different surface’s normal angle. Though layer thickness does not directly affect the wear rate, but surface roughness tests show that layer thickness has a great impact on the quality of the abraded surface. When the thickness of the layers is high, the abraded surface has deeper valleys, and thus has a more negative skewness. This paper presents an original approach in abrasion behavior improvement of DLP parts which no research has been done on it so far; thus, bringing the AM one step closer to maturity.

Starting from the extrusion billet, different reduction sequences were used to fabricate tubing to the same final dimensions. The fabrication sequences varied in the reductions of area, wall thickness, and diameter and also in the number of rolling steps (five to three), corresponding to area reductions in the range from 38% to 90%. They included common reduction routines as well as experimental reduction procedures. The microstructural properties and the corresponding textures were measured in each sequential pass for the as-rolled and for the annealed conditions, respectively. The results show that the reduction parameters of the final step predominantly determine the microstructure and texture in the final tube. The parameters governing the texture development, such as the reductions in wall thickness, diameter, and area as well as the intermediate annealing conditions, are determined after each reduction step. Maximum intensities and spread of basal and prism pole orientations, f-factors, etc., describing the texture are correlated with the microstructural parameters, such as grain size, degree of recrystallization, and hardness. After the final cold reduction step, different annealing temperatures were applied in order to follow up and correlate the changes in microstructure and texture for The final tube condition. The results of these measurements allow conclusions about the recrystallization kinetics, as a function of cold deformation, annealing temperature, and annealing time. Their correlation with the factors determining the texture, resulting from the investigated reduction parameters, lead to an understanding of the control and improvement of the properties of the final tube.

In hexagonal close-packed metals, the development of a strong deformation texture is caused by the reduced availability of slip systems, their nonsymmetrical distribution, and the fact that twinning obeys strict, crystallographic orientation relationships. This in turn occurs characteristically according to the metal-specific structure parameters. In zirconium and Zircaloy, the development of the strong deformation texture is caused by the complicated interaction between slip and twinning. The factor governing the texture formation is the material flow, which for tube reductions is determined not only by the reduction in cross-section, but in addition by the reductions in wall thickness and diameter, and more specifically by the relative ratio of wall to diameter reduction. The knowledge gained from the tube reduction process can be used to explain the texture formation during sheet rolling and wire drawing. By knowing the relationship between texture formation and reduction parameters, it is possible to tailor the texture in Zircaloy tubing within the given limits, according to in-service requirements.
