Tulaylat Ghassul: an Appraisal of Robert North's Excavations (1959–60)

Abstract

Tulaylat Ghassul is an important Chalcolithic period site that has been excavated periodically since 1929. Robert North of the Pontifical Biblical Institute conducted excavations there for one season and reported his findings in 1961. This study reviews his publication and discusses the archaeological materials excavated. Emphasis is placed on understanding the sequence of events and the use of domestic space through a reconstruction of stratigraphic sequences and by considering artifacts and features in the context of previous excavations. Much of the archaeological material discussed in this review is published for the first time.
