Tumor Antigen Occurs inN-Glycan of Royal Jelly Glycoproteins: Honeybee Cells Synthesize T-Antigen Unit inN-Glycan Moiety

Abstract: In our previous paper (Kimura, Y., et al., Biosci. Biotechnol. Biochem., 67, 1852-1856, 2003), we found that a complex type N-glycans containing beta1-3 galactose residue occurs on royal jelly glycoproteins. During structural analysis of minor components of royal jelly N-glycans, we found complex type N-glycans bearing both galactose and N-acetylgalactosamine residues. Detailed structural analysis of pyridylaminated oligosaccharide revealed that the newly found N-glycan had a complex type structure harboring a… Show more

“…The Galβ1,3GalNAcβ1,4GlcNAc motif, which appears to constitute the antennae for some of the glucuronylated glycans described here, has been previously found in unglucuronylated form as a ‘T-antigen’ on biantennary N-glycans from honeybee royal jelly [57], whereas GalNAcβ1,4GlcNAc is found in fucosylated form on honeybee venom glycoproteins [58]. Relevant β1,3-galactosyltransferase and β1,4- N -acetylgalactosaminyltransferase enzymes have been described from insect sources [59-62].…”

“…In a previous report, 1) we found a new complex-type N-glycans bearing the Gal 1-3GalNAc (T-antigen) unit among the N-glycans obtained from total royal jelly glycoproteins (RJGs), and we proposed a unique Nglycan processing mechanism working in the cephalic portion of the honeybee, indicating the involvement of a new 1-3 galactosyltransferase ( 1-3GalT) in the Nglycan processing pathway. Furthermore, we confirmed the occurrence of 1-3GalT activity in the microsomal fraction prepared from the cephalic portion of the honeybee.…”
