Tumor regression and histologic clearance after neutron brachytherapy for bulky localized cervical carcinoma

Abstract: The response of bulky, advanced Stage IB and early Stage II carcinoma of the cervix to neutron brachytherapy (NT and radiotherapy) was studied using combined NT radiation and extrafascial hysterectomy with histologic evaluation. Scheduling of neutron therapy relative to external beam photon therapy, tumor volume, tumor stage, tumor histology, and clinical tumor clearance were assessed in these studies. NT was easily combined with surgery in this study. Low stage tumors, small tumor volume and ‘early’ neutron i… Show more

“…Surgery provided specimens to study and evaluate for the effects of radiation therapy. 18 We evaluated the efficacy of neutrons and radiation to eradicate tumor from the hysterectomy specimen' ' and this allowed us to assess dose-re~ponse,~~ RBE,24 dose survival curve the low-dose/high-dose per session advantage,24 and the regenerative characteristics of cervix cancer during radiation therapy.2s We did not anticipate that this method would be so effective in evaluating the potential and effectiveness of neutron therapy. A second important group Vol.…”

“…Intracavitary neutron therapy was found to produce optimal results when given early during external radiation. 8 The current investigation was undertaken in order to determine the efficacy of outpatient intracavitary 252Cf neutron therapy when combined with external beam photon therapy and extrafascial hysterectomy in the treatment of bulky, barrel-shaped Stage IB cervical cancers. The frequencies of radiation-related complications and tumor clearance also were evaluated.…”
