“…The histopathological features of the leiomyosarcoma in the presented case were similar to those described in the genital system and also in other organ systems of different species with highest frequency in dogs and cats. ABSTRACT:A 6-year-old pet female degu (Octodon degus), in good body condition, was referred to a clinic with the presence of a large tumour in the anogenital area. The mass was bluntly dissected from the surrounding skin and muscles. The medial part of the tumour was associated with the vaginal wall which was also excised with 2 mm margins. No visible changes on the inner vaginal surface were seen. On gross examination the surface of the mass was glossy and pink-coloured; the cut surface was grey to red with greyish-white foci in a part of the mass. Histopathological examination showed a tumour composed of pleomorphic spindle to ovoid cells forming interlacing bundles and variably dense fibrous connective tissue separated by streams of neoplastic cells. Several smaller foci of coagulation necrosis were present within the tumour tissue. The neoplastic cells exhibited a high mitotic index, which ranged from six to seven mitoses per 10 high power fields. By immunohistochemical examination the positivity of neoplastic cells was demonstrated with smooth muscle actin (SMA) and vimentin, while no immunoreactivity was acquired for cytokeratins. Based on morphological features of the tumour and immunohistochemical examination a diagnosis of vaginal leiomyosarcoma was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a vaginal leiomyosarcoma in a degu.

Os arquivos de biópsia do período de 2000 a 2010 do SPV-UFRGS foram revisados e levantados os casos de neoplasias mesenquimais de genitália (útero, cérvix, vagina e vulva) de cadelas. Realizou-se estudo retrospectivo de 43 casos, incluindo caracterização histológica, coloração tricrômico de Masson (TM) e imuno-histoquímica (IHQ). As principais raças acometidas foram Cocker, Poodle e Pastor Alemão, porém o maior número de casos foi observado em cães sem raça definida (SRD). A idade média dessas cadelas foi de 10,6 anos (variação de 3 a 10 anos). Quanto à localização dos tumores, 44,2% estavam na vagina, 27,9% no útero, 23,3% na vulva e 4,6% na cérvix. Histologicamente, 46,5% eram leiomioma, 41,9% fibroleiomioma, 7,0% fibroma e 4,6% leiomiossarcoma. Na coloração de TM, os fibromas apresentaram todas as células neoplásicas coradas em azul (colágeno), os leiomiomas e os leiomiossarcomas apresentaram menos de 50% de colágeno em meio às células neoplásicas musculares e os fibroleiomiomas mais de 50%. Na IHQ, os fibromas apresentaram marcação positiva para vimentina e negativa para desmina. Todos os leiomiomas eram positivos para vimentina (em mais de 50% células) e para desmina (75% dos casos em mais de 50% das células e 25% em menos de 50%). Em um dos casos de leiomiossarcoma houve imunomarcação para vimentina e ausente para desmina e, no outro, ocorreu o oposto. Os fibroleiomiomas apresentaram marcação para vimentina em 94,4% (em mais de 50% células) e para desmina em 77,8% (64,3% em menos de 50% das células e 35,7% em mais de 50%).

Malignant Ovarian Granulosa Cell Tumour in a Ewe

We describe a rare case of malignant granulosa cell tumour in an adult ewe, euthanised due to progressive weight loss. Necropsy examination revealed a neoplastic enlargement of the right ovary, multifocal neoplastic masses in the lung and spleen, and severe enlargement of mediastinal and iliacal lymph nodes. Histopathology of the right ovary revealed a malignant ovarian granulosa cell tumour with metastases to the lung, spleen, and mediastinal and iliacal lymph nodes. Immunohistochemistry confirmed histopathological diagnosis. Neoplastic cells reacted positively for CK MNF 116 and vimentin and were negative for CK 7 and desmin. To our knowledge this is the first report of a malignant granulosa cell tumour in ewe.
