Abstract: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide and causes significant healthcare and economic burden. Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor. There is a lack of effective treatments for COPD due to the poor understanding of the underlining mechanisms. Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is implicated in respiratory diseases such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis.
