Tunable GaAs Laser in an External Dispersive Cavity

Abstract: Tunability of the cw radiation from a GaAs injection laser in an external dispersive cavity was achieved over a range of 150 Å about a center wavelength of 8525 Å at 77°K. The emitted radiation was analyzed with a Fabry-Perot etalon. Under certain conditions single-mode operation with cw output power as large as 17 mW was observed. Half-width of such modes was estimated to be less than 350 MHz.

“…Experiments on Q-switching [1,2] and self modulation [3,4] as well as on mode selection [5,6] and on mode synchronization [7][8][9] have confirmed these properties. Compound systems are of interest because they can be used to influence the dynamic and spectral behaviour of the laser emission.…”

“…41,42 The typical tunable ECL system comprises a semiconductor laser diode or an SOA with an anti-reflection (AR) coating on at least one facet, a collimator for coupling the output of the diode to the external cavity, and an external mode-selection filter, as described in a recent textbook 43 and review. 44 Through the insertion of a wave-length-selective element into the system, an ECL configuration permits emission of a single-mode with a linewidth that is considerably less than that of a laser diode.…”

“…It has recently been reported [1][2][3] that the longitudinal mode spectrum of a GaAs injection laser can be controlled by using a diffraction grating and a lens as part of the laser cavity. In the arrangement that was used (Fig.…”

“…The side of the diode facing the lens is antireflection (AR) coated. By rotating the grating the laser can be tuned over a range of ~ 15 nm with all the output power contained in a narrow wavelength band (typically 0.05 nm) approximately given by 6 2 = 2/N, (2) where N is the total number of illuminated lines *Present address: Ontario Hydro Research Centre, Toronto, Canada. ~Throughout this paper the terms 'rod' and 'fibre' are used interchangeably.…”
