Tunable High Refractive Index Polymer Hybrid and Polymer–Inorganic Nanocomposite Coatings

Abstract: Atomized spray plasma deposition (ASPD) provides a single-step, low-temperature, and dry approach for the preparation of high refractive index hybrid polymer or polymer–inorganic nanocomposite coatings. Refractive indices as high as 1.936 at 635 nm wavelength have been obtained for ASPD 4-bromostyrene/toluene–TiO 2 nanocomposite layers containing low titania loadings. Thin films with any desired refractive index up to 1.936 can be easily deposited onto a variety of substrates by varying … Show more

“…Photonic-aimed polymers provide good transparency in the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges. Still, their lower refractive indices (usually between 1.3 and 1.7 in the visible [33], up to 1.936 [34]) compared to Si (n g = 3.6 @λ = 1.550 µm) provide weaker mode confinement and thus larger waveguide bending losses. As a result, the PRR dimensions must be much larger, which narrows the free spectral range between resonance peaks, thus reducing the control over the device output.…”

“…The higher the content of inorganic nanoparticles in the polymer matrix, the worse the transparency of polymers. [61,62] The introduction of some flame retardants may reduce the mechanical strength of composites to a certain extent. [63,64] The increase in refractive index is accompanied by an increase in dispersion.…”

“…24 However, the filler surface modification may be used as an effective way to solve the problem. [25][26][27][28] The acid surface modification of titanium dioxide nanoparticles showed good compatibility with hydrophilic moieties of polymer, hence result in remarkable filler loading and maximum RI of 1.77. 27 According to the method developed 29 the zinc sulfide nanoparticles were almost well dispersed and immobilized in polythiourethane matrix resulted in nanocomposite with RI of up to 1.848.…”

“…Despite the efficacy of the most mineral compounds such as titanium oxide, zinc sulfide, the efficient dispersion of mineral particles in the polymer matrix still remains a big challenge and the improper dispersion of inorganic species may be regarded as main source of the film opacity. 26,28 In this study, two types of aromatic monomers; an aromatic monomer based on GMA and an ionic monomer based on biocompatible 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate; HEMA were developed. A new type of epoxy acrylate oligomer based on phthalic anhydride was also prepared.…”
