Tunable magnetophoretic method for distinguishing and separating wear debris particles in an Fe‐PDMS‐based microfluidic chip

Abstract: Wear debris analysis provides an early warning of mechanical transmission system aging and wear fault diagnosis, which has been widely used in machine health monitoring. The ability to detect and distinguish the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic debris in oil is becoming an effective way to assess the health status of machinery. In this work, an Fe‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)‐based magnetophoretic method for the continuous separation of ferromagnetic iron particles by diameter and the isolation of ferromagnetic … Show more

“…The magnetic force proportionality constant can be calculating using Equation ( 4), which takes into account the fluid viscosity (𝜂), the particle diameter (𝑑 𝑝 ), the particle velocity components (𝑣 𝑥 and 𝑣 𝑦 ) in the x and y coordinate, respectively, and the difference between particle and fluid density (Δ𝜌) [31]. The addition of gadolinium modifies the fluid viscosity and fluid density according to Equations ( 5) and (6), respectively [16]. The local magnetic field driving force, 𝐒 𝑚, is determined from the measurement of the magnetic microparticle velocity components, corrected for the contributions from the particle gravity and buoyancy forces.…”

“…Timely detection and maintenance can prolong the lifespan of ship equipment, reducing the need for costly replacements and improving the overall efficiency of the vessel [35,36]. In summary, on-line oil wear debris detection sensors are instrumental in marine engineering for their ability to enhance safety, reduce operational costs, prolong equipment lifespan, and support environmentally responsible practices by efficiently monitoring and managing wear in ship equipment [37,38].…”
