Tuned mass damper and high static low dynamic stiffness isolator for vibration reduction of beam structure

Abstract: In this work, the combination effect of tuned mass damper and high static low dynamic stiffness (HSLDS) isolator is investigated in reducing the vibration amplitude of Euler–Bernoulli beam with a nonlinear attachment. The performance of the absorber is studied in two cases; the first case, HSLDS isolator is one degree of freedom and the second case, two degree of freedom isolator is combined of HSLDS isolator and tuned mass damper absorber. By comparing the performance of these two isolators, it is revealed th… Show more

“…The time responses linked with Figure 13 around the resonance are displayed in Figures 13 and 14. As explained in Raei and Dardel, [ 37 ] the system under this condition experiences something like a saddle‐node bifurcation, in which it escapes the limit cycle and after a while enters it again. This behavior, repeating frequently, impairs the absorber's tuning function.…”

“…As it was thoroughly explained in Raei and Dardel, [ 37 ] pendulum vibration absorbers have some nonlinear behavior when the pendulum oscillations go beyond 1 radian, where another group of unstable responses might exist temporarily around the resonance area.…”

“…2 In this regard, tuned mass dampers (TMDs) as one of the types of vibrating absorbers have widely been utilized, and various researches have been done to study their behavior. [3][4][5][6] Narrow frequency band limitation of linear absorbers push researchers to implement new absorbers such as piecewise linear vibration absorber and Nonlinear Energy Sinks (NESs). 7 NES includes a small mass which is connected to the primary system by means of a nonlinear spring.…”

“…In case the use of flexible systems is directed by governing logic that is not specifically designed considering extraneous dynamical effects, negative characteristics such as undesired vibrational effects and generation of additional noise render their application questionable in the first place as they are in opposition with the benefits of the use of non-rigid systems. [1][2][3][4][5] Continuum mechanisms can be cited as a class of flexible systems in which a core mechanism is used alongside with additional appendages. While control of continuum mechanism systems considering extra appendage DOFs is potentially possible by installation of additional sensors and actuators on appendage, this often results in significant increase in control cost.…”
