Tuned-mass-damper-inerter optimal design and performance assessment for multi-storey hysteretic buildings under seismic excitation

Abstract: Inerter-based vibration absorbers (IVAs), such as the tuned-mass-damper-inerter (TMDI), have become popular in recent years for the earthquake protection of building structures. Previous studies using linear structural models have shown that IVAs can achieve enhanced vibration suppression, but at the expense of increased control forces exerted from the IVA to the host building structure. The authors recently developed a bi-objective IVA design framework for linearly behaving buildings to balance between struct… Show more

“…α = 1 in Eq. Therefore, as in previous sections, the focus here is on examining the influence of different NVD damping exponent α in Eq.…”

“…13 the NVD damping exponent. This is especially true with regards to the peak inerter force which typically takes on large values and, in this regard, it dominates the TMDI design for the seismic protection of buildings as detailed in the literature (Ruiz et al 2018;Taflanidis et al 2019;Patsialis et al 2021). Indeed, it is seen that reductions higher than 15% to the peak inerter force are achieved for the first 3 GMs listed in Table 2 as the damping exponent is reduced from α = 1.5 to α = 0.1.…”

“…The main objective of the present paper is to discuss the preference of different types of dampers from the viewpoints of structural performances (deformation and acceleration) and costs. However, since the investigation on the nonlinear response of building structures with inertial dampers under largeamplitude ground motions is of great interest (Patsialis et al, 2021;Talley et al, 2021), further discussion on the detailed behaviors of nonlinear building structures with inertial dampers under unexpected large-amplitude earthquake ground motions will be made in the future.…”
