Tuning Microphase Separation, Thermal Characteristics, and Physicomechanical Properties of Shape Memory Polyurethanes by Incorporation of Isocyanate‐Modified Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles

Abstract: Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are subsequently modified with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and octadecyl isocyanate (OD) to yield MNPs-g-OD. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) verified successful modification of MNPs with three different ratios of OD. Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) nanocomposites containing 4 wt% of the neat, APTES-grafted, and OD-grafted MNPs are prepared through solution ca… Show more

“…However, extra peaks could be observed at 2ϴ = 30.1, 35.5, and 43.2°. According to our previous study, 26 these diffraction peaks are respectively attributed to the (220), (311), and (400) crystalline planes of the OD‐ g ‐MNPs. It is noteworthy that due to the low content of hard segments and their insufficient orderliness to form crystals, the crystalline diffraction peaks assigned to hard segments could not be detected in the XRD patterns of PU and its nanocomposites 29 …”

“…The mechanical properties of the PU nanocomposites were studied both at room temperature and 50°C, and the results were reported in Figure 6. According to our previous studies, 26,34,37 the mechanical properties of the PU nanocomposites are mainly affected by the degree of crystallinity of PCL segments, nanofiller content, hard segment contents, and HBI CO . To reduce the controlling parameters of the mechanical properties, the OD‐grafted MNPs/PU nanocomposites were tested at 50°C.…”
