Tuning of fractional order PID controller for higher order process based on ITAE minimization

Abstract: This paper presents the time domain optimal tuning of fractional order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) controller designed for higher order fractional model by using optimization with integral performance indices. The Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) is chosen as performance measure because it is one of the good tuning criterion to obtain controller parameters and widely used in PID controller design. The minimization of the ITAE is carried out by using Genetic Algorithm (GA). GA minimizes the ITAE… Show more

“…For evaluating convergence criteria of GA evolution, the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) is commonly applied to terminate the optimization problem. The goal of ITAE index is to minimize the absolute error and settling time for the optimal control structure [45]. In this paper, GA solution minimizes the ITAE criteria and gives the optimal values of AFC-GA control parameters.…”

“…In Equation 8, the notations used to represent the DC-link voltage starting time and time to reach a steady-state position during transients are t 0 and t 1 , respectively. Equation 7to (9) are based on the ITAE performance index, and its discrete version implementation is illustrated in Figure 4. As described earlier, ITAE is preferred in the proposed study because it typically results in the most conservative settings of a PI-compensator.…”

“…Note that this approach has been popular for so long due to its ability to offer salient features such as easy‐to‐implement and simple formulation. Nevertheless, it decides the ultimate gains of PI‐compensator when the PV system is stable, and therefore these indices will no longer remain optimal during the dynamic environment 9 . As a result, the filtering capability and dynamic performance of the PV system degrades.…”
