Many chemical and nonchemical processes exhibit integrating behavior. This paper presents new approach for deriving parameters of proportional-integral-derivative controller for various types of integrating processes. In order to obtain enhanced performance, the controller is augmented by a second order filter. In the process of deriving controller and filter parameters, time delay is approximated by second order Laguerre shift. Analytical tuning rules are derived on the basis of the sensitivity of loop transfer function. With the help of polynomial method, the poles are placed so as to minimize the overshoot in the servo response. A set point filter is also employed to mitigate the overshoot and settling time in servo response. Besides, the set point filter is able to decouple servo and regulatory responses. The proposed method is compared with recently proposed methods. The evaluation is carried out in terms of various performance indices. Investigation of evaluation results reveals that the proposed method offers considerable improvement over the existing methods.

In industrial processes, unstable system produces undesirable peak overshoot. So, PID controller with compensator and set point filter is designed using direct synthesis method. The set point filter reduces the peak overshoot. PID controller with compensator improves the overall response of the system. In this method, the characteristics equation of the system with PID controller and a compensator is compared with a desired characteristics equation. A single tuning parameter is used to find controller parameters, compensator and set point filter.

A novel multi-loop control configuration with two controllers is suggested for integrating processes having large dead-time. The inner-loop consists of a Smith predictor having proportional (P)/proportional-derivative (PD) controller for first/second-order integrating processes, respectively. Once the dead-time is compensated by the inner-loop Smith predictor, a fractionalorder internal model controller (FOIMC) is designed in the outer-loop. The P/PD controllers are tuned using direct synthesis methodology. The proposed control architecture has three adjustable parameters (inner and outer closedloop adjustment parameters, fractional-order of the FOIMC low-pass filter).Based on extensive simulations, the tuning ranges for the above-mentioned adjustable parameters are specified. Suitable justification is also provided for the suggested range of tuning parameters. Several benchmark examples of plant models are used to study the set-point following and disturbance elimination capabilities of the proposed control architecture. Quantitative performance measures are also computed for comparing the suggested and previously reported schemes. It is evident that the suggested FOIMC based Smith predictor yields enhanced control performance than some recently reported techniques.
