Turbodrilling System and Diamond-Impregnated Bit Saved Three Trips in a Hard Carbonate Reservoir

Abstract: In a learning process of using turbodrilling and hybrid bits in Field A, a technical feasibility study was performed by the operator and service companies involved to analyze the viability of executing this new well whilst creating new products to optimize drilling performance in the complex Cretaceous formations. The study had two basic objectives: increasing the rate of penetration (ROP) and reducing the numbers of runs to complete the section. The Well-3 was planned to drill through three hig… Show more

“…The impregnated diamond bit is the most commonly used drill bit type in deep hard rock geological drilling, meeting the drilling needs of highly abrasive formations with its unique self-sharpening process and rock-breaking method [7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Its rock-breaking mechanism is similar to that of a grinding wheel working on a workpiece.…”

“…Among these, the melting temperature of Cu and Cu-alloys are approximately 900 • C, while Co, Ni, Fe and Mn powders are around 1200-1500 • C. Thus, the formers are usually used as filling phases, and the latters are usually used as bonding phases. Additionally, with the popularization of all-hydraulic drill rig in geological exploration, and the increasing well depth of oil and gas drilling, WC has been altered from the conventional particle reinforced material to a primary content in hot pressed impregnated diamond bit [24][25][26].…”
