Turkey is the country with the highest Syrian refugee population hosted in the world. Social acceptance of immigrants by the local community is as important as the social cohesion of immigrants regarding the social integration process. The aim of the current study was to examine the role of social contact, intercultural sensitivity, intergroup anxiety, gender, age, education, abroad experience and city on attitudes of Turkish local society towards Syrians. In this regard, data were collected from 207 local community members living in Ankara and Adana provinces of Turkey. According to the analysis, qualitative social contact, intercultural sensitivity and intergroup anxiety predicted the attitudes of the local community towards Syrians. In addition, intergroup anxiety had a mediating role between qualitative social contact, intercultural sensitivity and attitudes towards Syrians. When close social contact and intercultural sensitivity of Turkish local society increase, intergroup anxiety decreases and it increases positive attitudes towards Syrians. Lastly, while there was no gender difference in attitude towards Syrians, females were higher in intercultural sensitivity than males.

Young people's attitudes towards Syrians will play a decisive role in Turkish society's future as a significant proportion of the population consists of Syrians today. As of June 2022, there are approximately 3,7 million Syrians in Turkiye. The literature shows that social media and socialization are important factors affecting individuals' attitudes towards immigrants. This article explores how (1) the amount of time spent on social media, and (2) self-reported adequate socialization in daily life affect perception toward Syrian immigrants among young adults in Turkiye. We used data from the Turkish Youth Survey (TYS), which was conducted in 2018 by interviewing 7,949 individuals between the ages of 18 and 30. We measured anti-immigrant perception by using answers given to the question of whether the study participants would live in the same neighborhood as Syrians. The findings indicate that young adults become less open to the idea of living with the Syrian immigrants in the neighborhood as they spend more time on social media. We also find that those who say they are adequately socializing in their daily lives are less likely to say they do not want to live in the same neighborhood as Syrian immigrants.

This study aims to measure the impact of "social work with immigrants and asylum seekers" course in the social work undergraduate curriculum on the social work students based on the example of Syrians. In this way, social workers who have responsibility for working with vulnerable and fragile groups, whether the courses they take during their undergraduate education processes have created an unexpected level of change, will be addressed on a current, dynamic and important subject. This study was carried out with undergraduate students taking "social work with immigrants and asylum seekers" course from two different public universities in our country. In this process, the research was designed according to the single group pretest-posttest model with the quantitative research method using the personal information form, "Xenophobia Scale" and "The Attitude Scale Towards Syrians". As a result of the research, the scores received by the students from "Xenophobia Scale" and "The Attitude Scale Towards Syrians" which was applied before and after "social work with immigrants and asylum seekers" course were compared and significant difference was found between the scores. Post-test scores of both universities' social work students which was received from "Xenophobia Scale" and "The Attitude Scale Towards Syrians" significantly higher than the pre-test scores (p<0,01). As a result, It has been determined that the undergraduate course given to social work students for immigrants and refugees has a positive effect on the perception of social work students towards Syrians. In addition, it has been observed that this significant effect depends on many components as well as the permanent gains and behaviors created in the desired direction with structured education processes can be used effectively in studies and trainings such as migration, social cohesion, diversity and living together.
