“…Research has shown that, in addition to its social importance ( Wang & Gantz, 2010 ), health-related reporting has a direct impact on the quality of life of the audience and is especially important in providing information about new or emergent concerns, threats, treatments and cautions ( Barry et al, 2009 ; Dutta-Bergman, 2004 , 2005 ; Marlenga et al, 2017 ; Rains, 2007 ). Relatedly, health reporting is associated with positive health outcomes ( Niederdeppe et al, 2007 ), especially because obtaining initial information through news media can prompt people to seek out medical attention ( Garlarce et al, 2011 ), or engage in further “health information seeking behavior” ( Johnson, 1997 , p. 320).
