Twenty-four years of Dutch Trig® application to control Dutch elm disease

Abstract: Since 1992 elm trees have been treated with a biological control product Dutch Trig Ò to protect them from infection by Ophiostoma novo-ulmi causing Dutch elm disease (DED). The active ingredient of the biocontrol product consists of the fungus Verticillium albo-atrum strain WCS850. A conidiospore suspension of this fungus is injected into the vascular system of elm trees at a height of 1.3 m. This biocontrol product prevents healthy elm trees from fungal infection transmitted by elm bark beetles. Dutch Trig Ò… Show more

“…Many studies support the hypothesis that fungal endophytes may enhance the tolerance of the host tree to fungal pathogens [e.g. 2, [59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68]. Those ndings are extremely important, as in future, there might be a possibility to favor the use of bene cial endophytes that can act as biocontrol agents against pathogens and in this case against S. sapinea.…”

“…Through the induction of plant defense response in the host's metabolism, infections of pathogens or herbivors [269] can be prevented by a persistent form of resistance [204]. Since 1992, the commercial biocontrol product Dutch Trig ® (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) has been used to protect elm trees from infection [270] by the blue stain fungus O. novo-ulmi causing Dutch elm disease (DED). The product consists of a conidiospore suspension of the endophytic fungus Verticillium albo-atrum strain WCS850 (Dutch Trig, Apeldoorn, The Netherlands).…”

“…Additional prominent examples of biological control of tree pathogenic ascomycetes are the application of V. albo-atrum for the control of Dutch elm disease caused by O. ulmi and O. novo-ulmi (Scheffer et al, 2008 ; Postma and Goossen-van de Geijn, 2016 ), the exploitation of the hypovirulence phenomenon in the case of a dsRNA mycovirus-harboring strain of C. parasitica against chestnut blight (Milgroom and Cortesi, 2004 ) or the possibility of using fungi ( Trichoderma species) or bacteria ( P. fluorescens, Bacillus subtilis ) for the control of avocado white root rot caused by R. necatrix (Sztejnberg et al, 1987 ; Cazorla et al, 2006 , 2007 ; Ruano-Rosa and López Herrera, 2009 ).…”
