Twin-Wave-Based Optical Transmission With Enhanced Linear and Nonlinear Performances

Abstract: We review recent progresses on the use of twin-wavebased diversity schemes to enhance optical transmission performances in both nonlinear and linear regimes. Phase-conjugated twin waves with and without spectral redundancy are presented. The implications to perturbation-based fiber nonlinearity compensation are discussed. Performance enhancement techniques for real-valued orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) signals with a built-in Hermitian symmetry, as well as positivevalued OFDM twin signals sui… Show more

“…A transmission scheme for nonlinearity mitigation that resembles PSA-amplified links is the phase-conjugated twin waves (PCTW) scheme [7][8][9]. In similarity to PSA-amplified links, two waves are transmitted, the signal and a conjugated copy of the signal, and the nonlinear distortion is mitigated by performing a coherent superposition of the two waves [7].…”

“…More importantly, at high launch powers, the performance of the 16-QAM-PCTW technique is greatly limited because of the addition of the higher-order perturbative nonlinear distortion terms. The PCTW technique, in theory, is not capable of canceling the higher-order nonlinear distortion terms effectively and is experimentally demonstrated in [7].…”

“…However, the PCSC technique does not provide any significant performance improvement without 50% pre-EDC in the transmission link [6]. This is essentially a limiting factor for the implementation of the PCSC scheme in a dynamically routed optical network, where the exact dispersion symmetry in the link is difficult to achieve [7].…”

“…CS enhances the signal to noise ratio of the signal, since the signals add coherently, but random noise adds incoherently. It is also possible to "twin" a signal with its phase conjugated copy in any other orthogonal dimension rather than polarization state [10]. In particular, one may "twin" a signal and its phase conjugated copy in different time segments as:…”
