TwinsMX: Uncovering the Basis of Health and Disease in the Mexican Population

Abstract: TwinsMX is a national twin registry in Mexico recently created with institutional support from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. It aims to serve as a platform to advance epidemiological and genetic research in the country and to disentangle the genetic and environmental contributions to health and disease in the admixed Mexican population. Here, we describe our recruitment and data collection strategies and discuss both the progress to date and future directions. More information about the registry… Show more

“…A profile of QoL perception was generated; environmental, physical, psychological, and social domains were evaluated, as well as overall quality of life and health perception; this profile was compared with two groups of non-SLE subjects: the first group was integrated using non-SLE individuals registered on the Lupus RGMX platform, invited directly by the SLE participants and through social media. The second group was identified from the Mexican Registry of Twins (Twins MX) a registry previously established by the Neurogenomics consortium, of which Lupus RGMX is part, that shares the design and surveys with Lupus RGMX (Leon-Apodaca et al, 2019); for this analysis only one individual per family was considered.…”

“…The consortium is currently focused on three traits in the admixed Mexican population: (a) twins and members of multiple births (TwinsMX) ( 37 ), (b) people with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (LupusRGMX) ( 38 ), and (c) patients with Parkinson Disease (MEX-PD) ( 39 ). There is a lack of other nationwide registries that include genetic data and publicly available information characterizing Mexican people with these traits.…”
