Two cases of Schizophyllum asthma: Is this a new clinical entity or a precursor of ABPM?

Abstract: Abstract(Background) There is a close link between fungal sensitization and asthma severity.Though Schizophillum commune (S. commune, called"suehirotake"in Japanese), one of the basidiomycetous (BM) fungi, is a fungus that can cause allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis (ABPM) and allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS), whether the fungus causes or sensitizes the asthma is unclear. (Methods) The bronchial provocation test using S. commune may be a causative fungal antigen of bronchial asthma.

“…It is known that basidiomycetous molds chronically colonizing the lung can precipitate invasive disease and/or sensitize individuals to fungal antigens, leading to allergic fungal cough, allergic sinusitis, asthma, and ABPM (13,(26)(27)(28)(29). In the present study, these molds were most frequently identified as asymptomatic colonizers in patients with respiratory ailments.…”

“…The factors that influence the risk of asthma have been divided into those that cause the development of asthma and those that trigger asthma symptoms. It is known that fungi involved in outdoor allergens are important as environmental factors, and our recent studies suggested that S. commune is an important candidate organism acting as a causative fungal antigen of bronchial asthma [9] similar to Trichophyton species [17][18][19][20].…”

“…It also has been studied for many years as a model for understanding mating interactions (8,9). In recent years, S. commune has become clinically relevant as an etiological agent of respiratory infections in humans (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). However, it has been reported to be an etiological agent of other types of infections and conditions, such as a brain abscess (16,17), meningitis (18), an eye infection (19), palate ulceration (20), and onychomycosis (21).…”
