Two-Dimensional Index Modulation for the Large-Scale Multi-User MIMO Uplink

Abstract: A novel compressed sensing-aided generalised spacefrequency index modulation (CS-GSFIM) scheme is conceived for the large-scale multiuser multiple-input multiple-output uplink (LS-MU-MIMO-UL). Explicitly, the information bits are mapped both to the spatial-and frequency-domain indices, where we treat the activation patterns of the transmit antennas (TAs) and of the subcarriers separately. Specifically, our indexing strategy strikes a flexible trade-off between the throughput (Tp), performance and complexity. I… Show more

“…To further improve the spectrum efficiency, literature [14] combined IM with OFDM (OFDM-IM) and apply OFDM-IM to MIMO systems. Besides, applying IM across multiple domains (such as space, frequency and time domains) also attracts some attention and research [19] [20] including integrating IM with non-orthogonal multiple access [21] [22]. IM reduces power consumption and hardware cost while significantly increasing the complexity of the receiver.…”

“…T HE fifth-generation (5G) systems are being rolled out across the globe and research is well under way on massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques [1], millimeter wave (mmWave) communications [2] and ultradense networking (UDN) [3]. However, driven by the everincreasing demands of the Internet of Things (IoT), research has turned to the exploration of next generation concepts [4].…”

“…Moreover, to improve the flexibility of OFDM-IM, the compressed sensing (CS) concept can be introduced to form a virtual index space for IM operation [26]. This enables OFDM-IM to benefit from CS for further improving the trade-off between SE and EE [26]- [28]. Additionally, by introducing appropriate interleaving, the OFDM with CS-assisted index modulation (CSIM) is also capable of achieving a higher diversity gain and better error performance than the OFDM-IM [26].…”
