Two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks for energy-related electrocatalytic applications

Abstract: In this short perspective we examine recent developments in the design, synthesis and use of metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) for electrocatalytic applications. We discuss the inherent challenges and limitations that continue to plague conventional MOFs and novel strategies for overcoming them. In particular we focus on the growing interest in two-dimensional MOFs as a practical HER/OER/NRR/CO 2 RR catalyst. We also consider its exciting value as a tool for probing the underlying reaction mechanism and catalytic… Show more

“…Up to now, 2D MOFs and their derived catalysts have been demonstrated to be effective in various electrocatalytic processes, such as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and organic molecule oxidation. 7,8,10,[68][69][70][71][72][73] Because research progress for 2D MOFs and 2D MOF-derived electrocatalysts has been summarized and discussed in several reviews, especially for the OER and ORR, in this section, the recent applications of 2D MOFs and 2D MOF-derived electrocatalysts will be briefly summarized and discussed. More focus will be made on their applications in the HER, the CO 2 RR, the NRR, the UOR and organic molecule oxidation.…”
