Two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell/Monte Carlo simulations of streamer formation and propagation in catalyst pores in a surface dielectric barrier discharge

Abstract: Plasma catalysis is attracting great interest due to its synergistic combination of catalytic and plasma reactor processes. To provide possible controlling methods to this tunability, two‐dimensional particle‐in‐cell/Monte Carlo simulations are applied to investigate the propagation mechanisms of plasma streamers in the porous catalyst in a surface dielectric barrier discharge. Dry air at atmospheric pressure is investigated under a subnanosecond voltage pulse. The results show that the presence of the catalys… Show more

“…From table 2, it can be seen that the electron density rises to 10 21 m −3 in 0.2 ns, and further rises to 10 24 m −3 in 1 ns. Such rapid rise in electron density has also been observed in many similar works [58,63,64]. This is due to the high intensity FE and ionization and the small discharge volume (5.31 × 10 −8 m 3 ) in the micro-discharge.…”

“…In 2022, Zuo et al [56] applied a 2D particle/Monte Carlo model to study the propagation mechanism of plasma flow in porous catalysts packed in DBD reactors. The model took into account 19 collision reactions of electrons with O 2 and N 2 (including elastic, excitation, ionization, and attachment reactions).…”

“…DBDs are frequently used plasma sources with catalysts placed in the discharge region to form the so-called packed bed reactors. Depending on the control parameters, positive re-strikes, filaments or surface discharges can be formed between (or on) the catalysts [7,8]. APPJ is basically derived from DBD with flowing working gas.…”
