“…Two other studies (Garrett, 1968;Garrett, Alexander, and Bennett, 1967) were concerned with spatial requirements for, and biomechanical capabilities of, the hand. Altogether, six separate factors were investigated in these two studies.…”

“…Table 7 summarizes the results of one study (Garrett, 1968) in which several of these manual abilities were measured during barehanded operation and while doing the same tasks encumbered independently by uninflated and inflated full-pressure gloves. The other study (Garrett, Alexander and Bennett, 1967) measured the force loading on various handles (Figure 4) against which volunteer subjects could retain their grip. The data summarized in Figure 5 were collected from a simulated-aircraft downwardejection situation with the subjects' hands between their knees gripping one of the four types of handles, with the force applied to pull the handle downwatd.…”
Recent studies of the anthropometry and selected biomechanical characteristics of hands are summarized. These include: ( I ) conventional anthropometry of male and female hands, (2) the anthropometry of the relaxed hand, (3) comparison of certain engineering anthropometric and performance parameters between bare and pressure-gloved hands, and (4) the ability to retain grips on selected handles under high dynamic loads. The utility of these data for human factors engineering is discussed.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
