Two intertwined compartments coexisting in sporadic conventional colon adenomas

Abstract: face-epithelium-muscularis cells mucosae-axis, are found. 4 A slight variation in the configuration of the crypts and in the space between the crypts may occur, but crypt branching is rarely seen in fixed preparations. 4-6 In a previous study, we found only 3.7 (range, 2-5) single colon crypts lined with normal epithelium but exhibiting asymmetric shapes; called colon crypts with corrupted shapes (CCS), they were found amongst more than 200,000 crypts investigated in 22 colon segments, proximal or distal to su… Show more

“…Adenomas and serrated polyps (SPs; sessile serrated lesion [SSL] and traditional serrated adenoma [TSA]) are precancerous lesions that can progress to colorectal cancer (CRC) [ 1 - 3 ]. Therefore, polypectomy through colonoscopy is the most effective method to reduce the incidence and mortality of CRC [ 4 , 5 ].…”

[1][2][3] Therefore, polypectomy through colonoscopy is the most effective method to reduce the incidence and mortality of CRC. 4,5 However, since patients who undergo colonoscopic polypectomy have an increased risk of developing colorectal polyps www.irjournal.org ing to baseline polyp characteristics and new evidence on this topic, especially on the risk of metachronous CRC, are being reported, post-polypectomy surveillance guidelines have recently been updated by organizations in various countries.…”

“…In similarity to polypoid conventional colon adenomas, 16 small nonpolypoid conventional adenomas (SNPCoAs) and nonpolypoid LST are built of two different histological compartments; the dysplastic compartment on top and the nondysplastic compartment below.…”
