Two-Level Frames Aggregation with Enhanced A-MSDU for IEEE 802.11n WLANs

Abstract: IEEE 802.11n defines two schemes of frames aggregation aimed at maximize utilizing WLAN PHY efficiency at MAC level, through sharing headers and timings overheads. Despite their efficiencies in enhancing the MAC throughput, the schemes are characterized with yet other overheads due to the aggregation. Moreover, none of the two schemes is optimal in every condition: Both should work together to achieve this. In this paper, in order to optimize channel's bandwidth utilization, we proposed an enhanced A-MSDU with… Show more

“…Consequently, this paper presents an analytical model to examine overhead and throughput under saturation conditions (S). The overhead model is based on the work of Noma et al [9], whereas the extension model of normalized distributed coordination functions (DCF) throughput in saturated channel situation to frame aggregation is based on the study of Bianchi [25].…”

“…The work by Qian et al [8] highlighted that, two-level aggregation is created by combining A-MSDU and A-MPDU. However, the performance of frame aggregation methods suffered severely in an erroneous channel, which can lead to the emergence of unexpected problems such as corruption aggregation frames [9]- [12]. Certain improvements to the traditional frame aggregation method are suggested as a result of these challenges.…”

“…However, in a specific scene, the two-level aggregation may bring serious retransmission overhead. 17,18 Besides, in the A-MPDU aggregation mode, the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) and FER (frame error rate) will also affect the frame aggregation efficiency. 19 Jan and Sebastian 20 discussed the optimal MPDU size in different channels under the latest IEEE 802.11ax protocol.…”

“…Meanwhile, two aggregation types can be combined with each other to form a third aggregation type: two‐level aggregation, which can perform A‐MPDU aggregation by using A‐MSDU as a single MPDU to improve the MAC layer frame transmission efficiency. However, in a specific scene, the two‐level aggregation may bring serious retransmission overhead 17,18 . Besides, in the A‐MPDU aggregation mode, the SNR (signal‐to‐noise ratio) and FER (frame error rate) will also affect the frame aggregation efficiency 19 .…”
