Two new Ceratocystis species associated with mango disease in Brazil

Abstract: -Mangifera indica, a disease known as mango blight, murcha or seca da mangueira in Brazil, is caused by the canker wilt pathogen Ceratocystis fimbriata sensu lato. It is also closely associated with infestation by the non-native wood-boring beetle Hypocryphalus mangiferae (Coleoptera: Scolytinae). The aim of this study was to characterize Ceratocystis isolates obtained from diseased mango trees in Brazil. Identification was based on sequence data from ITS1+5.8S+ITS2 rDNA, part of the Beta-tubulin 1 gene, and p… Show more

“…The causal agent of the disease in Brazil resides in the C. fimbriata complex that is believed to include a number of distinct taxa (Van Wyk et al 2007;Harrington et al 2011;Van Wyk et al 2011;Van Wyk et al 2013) but the relatedness of these to C. manginecans remains to be fully resolved. The purported vector of C. manginecans in Oman, H. mangiferae is also associated with mango wilt in Brazil 3 (Castro 1960;Rossetto et al 1980;Al Adawi et al 2013a) where it is considered an invasive alien species.…”

“…The varieties Coração Boi, Espada, Ubá and Vitória were resistant to one strain but susceptible to the second (Ribeiro 1993;Ribeiro et al 1995). Given the fact that the pathogen/s in Brazil may encompass a number of discrete taxa or is one having considerable genetic variability (Harrington et al 2011;Van Wyk et al 2011), information on population genetic structure will be important for the development of effective management strategies for mango wilt disease in Oman, Pakistan and elsewhere (McDonald 1997;McDonald and Linde 2002;Milgroom and Peever 2003).…”

“…Some of these problems, such as Dutch elm disease (DED), have a long history, have been extensively researched, and are fairly well understood (23,56,70,113,149,168,169). In contrast, other similar diseases developed recently and are poorly or partially understood (2,3,42,51,73,89,94,98,114,127,137,154,158, 164,165). Significant data gaps may exist for the ecology, epidemiology and management of the latter diseases.…”

“…causes lethal canker and wilt diseases of economically important new encounter hosts (47, 140), but it is a non-aggressive colonizer of wounds on the original hosts in their native ranges (78,156,173). Ceratocystis fimbriata s. l. includes many tree pathogens (40,41,78,87,156,(163)(164)(165)172). The wide host range of C. fimbriata s. l. led Webster and Butler (171) to propose that it was a species complex, a view that has continued to develop (140).…”
