Two New Rhizobiales Species Isolated from Root Nodules of Common Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) Show Different Plant Colonization Strategies

Abstract: The intensive use of chemical fertilizers has a variety of negative effects on the environment. Increased utilization of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is one way to mitigate those negative impacts.

“…PGPT‐Pred, which is part of the PLaBAse web resource (Patz et al, 2021), was used to investigate gene cassettes ORFs encoding potential plant growth‐promoting traits (Ashrafi et al, 2022). Each plant rhizosphere and control soil sample housed sets of gene cassettes with predicted functions associated with plant growth promotion, including genes predicted to have both direct and indirect host effects (Figure 5 and Dataset S8).…”

“…COG functions were assigned to the gene cassettes using RPS‐BLAST v2.12.0, and Pfam functions were predicted using Interproscan‐5.55‐88.0 (Jones et al, 2014). Additionally, plant growth‐promoting traits were identified using Plant Growth‐Promoting Traits Prediction tool (PGPT‐Pred) (Ashrafi et al, 2022), and pathogenicity functions were predicted using SeqScreen (Balaji et al, 2022). SignalP V5.0 (Almagro Armenteros et al, 2019) was used for signal peptide predictions as a marker for identifying transmembrane or secreted gene products.…”

“…mentioned two other new publications in taxonomy of rhizobia and agrobacteria. The results of these two papers [4, 5] proposed the delineation of a new genus of the family Rhizobiaceae: Onobrychidicola ( Onobrychidicola muellerharveyae ), and a new Mesorhizobium species: Mesorhizobium onobrychidis, and two new Agrobacterium species: Agrobacterium burrii and Agrobacterium shirazense , respectively. The single known strain of Onobrychidicola does not induce nodules, so this genus is not of core interest to the Subcommittee but is a neighbouring genus to be watched.…”

“…There are many examples in the literature of how horizontal gene transfer has driven significant evolutionary changes, or helped organisms to adapt to abiotic stress [ 33 ]. There are also some examples of horizontal gene transfer helping plants to adapt to biotic stress: for example, when symbiotic genes are acquired by bacteria with PGPR traits [ 34 ]. It is well known that biofilms facilitate horizontal gene transfer between bacteria and that soil bacteria are often organized in biofilms on root, litter, and soil particles [ 35 ].…”
