Two new species and a new record of Lepiota (Basidiomycota, Agaricales) from the Dominican Republic

Abstract: Two new species of Lepiota (L. squamulodiffracta and L. sosuensis) and a new record (L. subgranulosa) are described based on collections made in the Dominican Republic. The phylogenetic position of the species based on nrITS data is analyzed and discussed. L. squamulodiffracta belongs in section Lepiota, and it is characterized by the velar patches on pileus split up into numerous minute squamules, striate-sulcate pileus up to the center, and penguin-shaped spores. L. sosuensis has overall white basidiocarps, … Show more

“…The morphological differences among the Lepiota species with hymeniform pileus covering are often subtle (Vellinga and Huijser 1999; Vellinga 2010), but nrlTS sequence data support the morphologically recognized species (Vellinga 2010; Vizzini et al 2014a, b; Justo et al 2015; Qasim et al 2015; Hosen et al 2016).…”

“…Based on the BLASTn results (sequences were selected based on the greatest similarity) and outcomes of recent phylogenetic studies incorporating Lepiota sequences (Vellinga 2003, 2004, 2010; Vizzini et al 2014a, b; Justo et al 2015; Qasim et al 2015; Hosen et al 2016) sequences were retrieved from GenBank for the comparative phylogenetic analysis. The nrITS and nrLSU datasets were analysed separately.…”

“…It is desirable that the other few Lepiota species morphologically and/or molecularly assignable to section Ovisporae that have been described or reported from the Antilles (Caribbean area) ( Pegler, 1983 ; Justo et al, 2015 ) will be investigated for the presence of amanitins.…”

“…It is quite easy to amplify and sequence, even from old specimens-up to 200 years old (Larsson and Jacobsson, 2004;Liimatainen et al 2014Liimatainen et al , 2020Nilsen et al 2020). ITS has been found to be a suitable barcode for some groups in the Agaricales, including the genera Amanita (e.g., Vizzini et al 2016b;Cui et al 2018;Saba et al 2019;Hanss and Moreau 2020), Cortinarius (e.g., Frøslev et al 2005Frøslev et al , 2007Frøslev et al , 2017Liimatainen et al 2014Liimatainen et al , 2020Stefani et al 2014;Garnica et al 2016;Nilsen et al 2020), Entoloma (Dima et al 2021), Gymnopilus (Thorn et al 2020), Hebeloma (Eberhardt et al 2013, Lepista (Wang et al 2019), Marasmius (Shay et al 2017;Haelewaters et al 2020a), Melanoleuca (Vizzini et al 2011;Antonín et al 2014Antonín et al , 2015Antonín et al , 2017, Tricholoma (Jargeat et al 2010;Heilmann-Clausen et al 2017), Tricholomopsis (Holec and Kolařík 2012;Cooper and Park 2016), and the families Agaricaceae (Justo et al 2015;Vizzini et al 2014aVizzini et al , b, 2019a, Lyophyllaceae (Bellanger et al 2015), andHygrophoraceae (Ainsworth et al 2013;Lodge et al 2014;Lücking et al 2017;Larsson et al 2018;...…”
