Two new species and new records of the genus Parachironomus Lenz, 1921 (Diptera, Chironomidae) from northern Russia

Abstract: Two new species of the genus Parachironomus Lenz, P. aquilonis sp. n. from the northern Urals and P. khatyrka sp. n. from the Russian Far East, are described and figured based on the morphology of the adult males. Adult males of P. hazelriggi Spies, 2000 and P. subalpinus (Goetghebuer, 1931) are redescribed and illustrated; both species are recorded for the first time from Russia, P. hazelriggi is new for the Palaearctic region.

“…Subsequently, the genus was studied by a number of authors in different life stages and geographical areas ( Edwards 1929 ; Townes 1945 ; Cranston et al 1989 ; Sæther and Spies 2013 ). Larvae of Parachironomus can be found in a variety of habitats, such as standing and flowing waters, soft sediments, or within aquatic macrophytes, while others are endo- or ectoparasites on snails ( Orel 2017 ). Among the Harnischia generic group, members of Parachironomus can separated from the similar genus Demicryptochironomus Lenz by the extended superior volsella with several distal setae always arising from distinct pits, and the inferior volsella with a pointed or blunt caudal projection ( Yan et al 2015 ).…”
