Two New Species and New Records of Springtails (Collembola: Entomobryidae, Paronellidae) from Nevis, Lesser Antilles

Abstract: We present the first records of species of Entomobryidae and Paronellidae (Collembola) from the Caribbean island of Nevis, from leaf litter collections on Mt. Nevis. We report 6 genera and 7 species, of which Dicranocentrus icelosmarias sp. nov. and Metasinella radkei sp. nov. are described as new. Evaluation of the dorsal chaetotaxy of D. icelosmarias sp. nov. suggests a closer affinity of Dicranocentrus to Heteromurus than to Orchesella. We provide a new interpretation of the homology of the dorsal chaetotax… Show more

“…Our dataset of Lepidocyrtus represents two subgenera: Setogaster ( Lepidocyrtus sp., L. sotoi and L. nigrosetosus ) and Lanocyrtus ( L. fimetarius ) (Bellini et al., 2015; Cipola et al., 2019b; Gisin, 1964). Lanocyrtus was recovered as an in‐group of Setogaster with high node support, and closely related to L. nigrosetosus , a widespread species in Neotropical Region (Katz et al., 2016; Soto‐Adames & Anderson, 2017). Setogaster species show a rounded dental lobe and can present scales on proximal antennae and femurs, as our sampled species, while Lanocyrtus taxa are devoid of both the dental lobe and scales on appendages (Cipola, Morais, Godeiro, et al., 2019; Yoshii & Suhardjono, 1989).…”

“…nov. belongs to the marias group of species as its dorsal head chaetotaxy is devoid of A1 , S2 and all posterior mac except Pa5 and rarely Pp5 [ 12 , 47 ]. The new species is most similar to other Neotropical taxa from marias group, especially D. antillensis Mari-Mutt, 1979 [ 12 ], D. icelosmarias Soto-Adames and Anderson, 2017 [ 48 ], D. marias Wray, 1953 [ 49 ] and D. paramoensis Mari-Mutt, 1983 [ 47 ] since they also share seven mac on dorsal head S row ( S0 – 1 , S3 – 6 ), labial papilla E lateral process ( l.p. ) short, not reaching the apex of the papilla, labial basomedian field (labial triangle) with M1 chaeta ciliate and m2 and e smooth, Th. II lacking p5 mac and Abd.…”

“…medial unpaired tooth, (a.p.) apical unpaired tooth; unguiculus lamellae = (ai) antero-internal lamella, (pe) postero-external lamella; (*) extra chaetae only on labial basomedian field; (**) Soto-Adames and Anderson [ 48 ] only described the background colour, devoid of blue pigments. Distal antennae colour unknown for this species.…”

“…Nearly complete dorsal chaetotaxy is again illustrated and compared with Soto-Adames and Anderson (2017). On dorsal head, a mic between the outer two mac of series M is homologous to m3.…”

“…Dorsal cephalic and tergal macrochaetotaxy, differentiated chaetae on tibiotarsi, tenent hairs, dental spines are the main diagnostic characters widely used by Mari-Mutt and subsequent authors. Soto-Adames and Anderson (2017) attempted to explore the complete idiochaetotaxy (including macrochaetae, microchaetae, partial S-chaetae) for the first time in Dicranocentrus ; homology of some elements were uncertain due to the absence of chaetotaxic modification during postembryonic development. These characteristics are usually unknown in four species from China: D. indicus Bonet, 1930 from Taiwan, D. chenae Ma, Chen & Soto-Adames, 2006 from Guangxi, D. wangi Ma & Chen, 2007 from Guangdong and D. liuae Xu & Zhang, 2014 from Anhui.…”
