Two New Species of Eriocaulon from the Tocantins-Araguaia River Basin, Brazil

Abstract: Two new species, Eriocaulon cylindratum and Eriocaulon araguaiense, from the Tocantins-Araguaia River basin in the Brazilian Cerrado, are described and illustrated. The species are similar, but they differ mainly in bi)th the shape i)f the capitula and the floral bracts. Eriocaulon araguaiense has hemispheric heads, and obovate, concave floral bracts. Eriocaulon cylindratum is characterized by ovoid or cylindrical heads, and obtruUate, carinate floral bracts. A key to all known Eriocaulon species from Tocantin… Show more

“…Collections were made randomly, primarily along state roads (MT-100, MT-126, MT-326, GO-164, GO-184, GO-173, GO-221, GO-324, GO-334, and GO-530) and federal roads (BR-070, BR-158, BR-242 and BR-251); in both, rainy and dry seasons (1997, 1999, 2004, 2006, and 2007). Part of this material has been used in previous studies (Gil et al 2007, Koehler and Bove 2001, Koehler and Bove 2004, Oliveira and Bove 2011), which overlap some portion of the study area for the present study. Surveyed habitats included rivers, streams, seasonally and permanently flooded areas (Fig.…”

“…Several systematic studies have focused on Eriocaulon in Australia [9,10] and India [12] using the molecular and morphological evidence. In the last ten years, many new Eriocaulon species have been described in India [13][14][15][16][17], Southeast Asia [18][19][20][21], and Brazil [22][23][24].…”

“…Because this species has a small area of occupancy (< 500 km 2 ), few locations are known (≤5) and it suffers an increasing of human pressure with continuing decline of area of occupancy, the conservation rating of Endangered Category (ENB2) is proposed. Eriocaulon araguaiense was included in Critically Endangered category in the original description (Oliveira & Bove 2011) This species occurs in the Pampas (RS) and Uruguay. It was not found in conservation units.…”
