Two new species of Heptapterus (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) from the Uruguay River basin, Brazil

Abstract: As part of an ongoing taxonomic revision of the genus Heptapterus from the Laguna dos Patos and Uruguay River drainages and Atlantic coastal streams of southern Brazil and Uruguay, two new species closely related to Heptapterus mustelinus were identified. Both species are endemic to small tributaries of the Uruguay River. The two new species are distinguished from each other and from other species of Heptapterus by arrangement of cephalic and trunk laterosensory systems, number of vertebrae and number of dorsa… Show more

“…All measurements were taken point to point and followed Lundberg and McDade (1986), Bockmann (1994) and Faustino‐Fuster et al . (2019). Standard length ( L S ) is given in millimetres, and the other measurements are expressed in percentage of L S or head length (HL) (Table 1a–c).…”

“…Before statistically analysing morphometric data, the VARSEDIG algorithm (Chuctaya et al ., 2018; Faustino‐Fuster et al ., 2019; Guisande et al ., 2016; Leigh & Bryant, 2015) was used in Rstudio version 3.6.1 (RStudio Team, 2020) to identify measurements that could be significantly associated with sexual dimorphism in Epactionotus . A linear regression was then conducted to describe the morphometric character found to discriminate males and females.…”

The same data set was used in both PCA and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), also performed in Past, to, respectively, search for general patterns of variation among specimens (Leal & Sant'Anna, 2006) and assess between-group patterns of body shape variation.…”

“…The type species, H. mustelinus, is most similar phenotypically to H. carnatus Faustino-Fuster, Bockmann & Malabarba, 2019, H. exilis Faustino-Fuster, Bockmann & Malabarba, 2019, H. mandimbusu Aguilera, Benitez, Terán, Alonso & Mirande, 2017, H. mbya Azpelicueta, Aguilera & Mirande, 2011, H. ornaticeps Ahl, 1936, and H. qenqo Aguilera, Mirande & Azpelicueta, 2011. All those species, except H. ornaticeps, were described from the southern extreme of the geographic range of Heptapteridae (Lower Paraná, Salí and Uruguay River basins, in Argentina and southern Brazil) (Bleeker 1864;Ahl 1936;Aguilera et al 2011Aguilera et al , 2017Azpelicueta et al 2011;Faustino-Fuster et al 2019). In addition, the type locality of H. ornaticeps, "Rio de Janeiro", is inaccurate (Bockmann and Guazzelli 2003).…”
